The order queue is currently closed. It’s expected to re-open in Spring, 2009. See this blog entry for more details.

Waiting List

If you’d like to order a custom bag, it starts with sending an email to zugsterbags@gmail.com indicating that you’d like to get on the waiting list for an order.

If you have questions first, go right ahead and email me – I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please note that, due to the long lead times, a place in the queue does not guarantee current prices.

Details

Once you’ve decided to order a bag, here’s what I need to know to make it:

  • Which model and size
  • Which options you want (i.e. extra pockets, x-strap, extra base layer, back pad, etc…)
  • If it’s a messenger bag, I need to know if you’ll be wearing it on your left or right shoulder. For most people, it’s the opposite of your writing hand (i.e. righties wear it on their left shoulder, lefties on the right), but about 20-25% of the bags I’ve made are opposite that convention.
  • Colors for the body, liner, pockets, padding, and binding. You can pretty much have any individual piece of fabric on the bag a different color if you want, so go crazy.
  • Any custom artwork you want on the flap (or elsewhere).
  • Any additional accessories you want (i.e strap pouches, tool bags, etc…)

I will take all those details and give you a quote for the full price. This can all happen before or after the deposit, and you can change the details up until the point I’m ready to make your bag.

Labor Charges

Please be aware that if you are ordering custom artwork, there will be a charge for any work I have to do to design your artwork or make it usable. If you send me a JPG you found with Google image search, the time it takes to trace that into a usable outline will be included. The best thing you can do is to supply clean vector artwork (Illustrator, postscript, Photoshop, etc…whatever format works for you) that’s already scaled correctly. I will be happy to supply dimensions for you to work with.

The Wait

Then, you must be patient. Zugster Bags is a 100% one person, part-time operation with extremely limited capacity. I work a day job as a software engineer, and make about 3 bags per month, so just do the math. If there are 15 bags ahead of yours, it will most likely take me 5 whole months to get to sewing your order.

The Finish Line

I’ll contact you when I’m nearing your bag in the queue, at which point the balance is due in full. Then I make your bag and ship it to you! Or, if you live in San Francisco, I offer free in-person delivery.
