If you’ve been following my flickr photostream, you’ve seen that the first new bag design of 2009, the Zugster handlebar bag is underway. I knocked off a couple of quick non-functional prototypes on Sunday to get a feel for putting them together and to experiment with how I’d like to make them.
Happy New Year, everyone!
To kick off 2009, I’ve put the 2 stock deluxe bags on sale at 10% of their normal price. That brings the Argyle Deluxe bag down to $272 (from $302) and the Linen Deluxe (so named because Brookwoods calls the color of tan Cordura™ that makes up the flap “linen”.Hey, I don’t name these colors!) is down to $239.
If you’ve visited this site before, you’ll notice that it looks completely different. Welcome to the new Zugsterbags.com! I think this is the 4th time I’ve re-designed it. For the most part, it’s structured the same as it always was, but has more room for presenting more information about the bags in a better structure, with less clutter. There are also far more images of each bag on the product pages.
Coming up – handle bar bags, panniers, and new ordering options, oh my! There’s more details on new products, new ordering options, how ordering is going to work, and when the order queue will be opened, after the jump.
If you’re thinking about ordering any tool bags or messenger bags from the Zugster Store, they must be placed by Noon, Pacific Time, on Saturday, December 20th. I’m leaving town to visit family on the 21st, so any order placed after the 20th will not ship until January 2nd.
Zugster bags has been featured in the December 2008 issue of San Francisco Magazine, along with other local San Francisco bag makers Lovelife, Ramblin’ Worker, Timbuk2 and Satchel Studio.
THE UTILITARIAN
Designed specifically for peddlers, Zugster Bags sit snuggly on your upper back, eliminating that annoying flopping factor. Owner Adam Alpern creates a custom-sewn design for each purchaser. Customers bring him ideas—a photograph of a tiger, say, or a drawing of a peace sign—that he re-creates by sewing fabric directly onto the bag. Alpern is a hobbyist with a day job, so he has only enough time to make four dozen bags a year. He’s currently booked up until the spring, so start thinking now about next year’s holiday gift list.
The Zugster Shop is open while supplies last. My stock of tool bags is all available for immediate online ordering. Makes great holiday gifts! It’s set up with PayPal ordering, which also accepts credit cards without the need to create a PayPal account.
Once again, I’m providing a couple of prize bags for Chicago’s Sadie Hawkin’s Day Race, which is once again benefiting the Chicago Women’s Health Center. Last year they raised $2,403.31, which is pretty fantastic if you ask me.

If you’re in Chicago on the weekend of November 8th – go! Race! Win!

It’s now possible to obtain 1” nylon webbing printed with the Multicam™ camouflage pattern that’s become so popular recently. I’ve made 6 Multicam™ bags myself. Next time I have occasion to buy materials I might pick up some. Tactical messenger bags, anyone?
